Open Submission Guidelines

The following are the guidelines for Writers to submit a work during an Open Submissions window during the months of January and August.

Failure to follow the guidelines is not encouraged as your submission will be discarded.

Your Submission

We only accept completed novel-length works of at least 90,000 words that are unpublished, were not self-published, and not made freely available. Works generated with artificial intelligence (A.I.) tools are not accepted.

Simultaneous Submissions: Simultaneous submissions—submitting a work to more than one publisher at the same time—are permitted. We respectfully ask that you notify us promptly when you are accepted by another publisher.

Multiple submissions: Multiple submissions—an author submitting more than one work per submission window—are accepted, but please limit the number to three works per submission window. If more than three are submitted, the first three in the order received will be considered.

Agented submissions: we accept agented submission year-round. Agents should contact Publisher@DarkAgePress.com to initiate the process.

What and How to Submit

All works submitted need to be as polished as possible with little or no grammar or composition mistakes. Authors wishing to submit a work must send a PDF via email of the first three chapters to: Submissions@DarkAgePress.com, and mail a print version of the first three chapters to the address below. Authors wishing to have the printed work returned should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (S.A.S.E.).

The email subject line must contain: Attention Submissions – [Name of Author] [Title of Book] [Genre].

Start the body of your email by telling us the genre of the work (Fantasy, Science Fiction, or Literary Fiction) and then give us a short paragraph of the synopsis.

For the printed material, a one page letter of introduction and a short summary of the work must accompany the printed chapters. All pages of the novel must have the author’s last name and page number in the header. If you are submitting Multiple Submissions, include the name of the novel in the footer of each page. The printed material must be in Times New Roman 12pt font. The author may provide a chapter summary of the submitted work if desired.

Submitted works must be postmarked during the month of open submission to be considered. Works submitted outside the submission window that include a S.A.S.E. will be returned. Those submissions that are not accepted or are received outside the submission dates will be destroyed.

The Review Process

Every press is different.  Every press has a unique style and vision for the novels they produce. This is done by guiding authors towards recasting parts of the novel, characters, descriptions, scenes, etc. so that the whole novel has a presence similar to all novels in it catalogue. This means that authors must be willing to change certain aspects of their novel in order to be picked up by a certain press. Some of the bigger presses do this through their imprints.  Here at Dark Age Press, we do this mostly by providing suggestions for changes.  Sometimes, it is a demand.  In all cases, Dark Age Press seeks to ensure a quality to all works it publishes.

An Author’s original vision for their story may initially make them reluctant to accept suggestions and be unwilling to change or alter portions or aspects of their stories. They should boldly keep those visions and resist. We do work with authors so that their vision remains true but, from time to time, we may request or even demand changes.  These will be explained and discussed with the author; perhaps rewriting sections of the story can preserve the original intent and satisfy our concerns. Ultimately, the main concern is selling lots of books, and we need the Author’s help to address things we see that could hinder significant public appeal. If you are an author who is closed to the idea of changing what you wrote, we cannot publish your work and recommend that you find a different publisher.  However, if you are open to discussing the limitless possibilities for alterations and changes that do not harm the initial offering but maybe simply smooths the rough edges, then Dark Age Press might be for you, but only if you are open to changes when warranted.
